Brad Isaac is one of my favorite bloggers. He has some really unique insights (check out 10 Steps You Can Take to Guarantee Failure), and today's post is exceptionally great.
Here's a quick intro:
You have a blog or a website and you want more traffic. But here’s the problem. You are competing with hundreds or thousands of other sites in your area of expertise. So what can you do without spending an arm and a leg to bring people to your site? Here’s a list of 10 ½ easy, pain free ways to explode your traffic without pulling out your hair or spending a fortune. Where is the ½ come in?
Some of the things I do at Make It Great! that Brad mentions include writing and posting reviews, post comments to other blogs, and sending a trackback to Brad's original post.
[Phil Gerbyshak enjoys learning from other bloggers' successes and failures. Brad Isaac is one such genius who shares both of these things.]

Do you really think leaving comments on other people's blogs works?
Well, it can't hurt, right?
Good to be connected with you on LinkedIn and I like the blog!

Phil, thanks for reminding me about Brad's blog. I had his feed in my reader until recently. Must have been accidentally purged with a reorganizing I did. So thanks.

Dan,
Try this...set aside an hour and go to your favorite blogs and post RELEVANT and Helpful comments. Then go back and check your stats after awhile. The key isn't to do it just for traffic.
I've done some comments on some blogs that have brought in hundreds of new visitors.

It always amazes me how some of the simplest ideas need to be drummed into us all the time. (Ok, into me all the time.) I just read both of Brad's posts; thanks for pointing them out, Phil.

Just a nod to you, you've been awarded the Thinking Blogger award. Come on by to check it out.

Brad,
I was just kidding. Sorry it didn't come across.
In fact, Blog commenting and partnering is the only "advertising" I've done for FRACAT and the traffic has gone from around 10,000 unique visitors at the beginning of this month to 25,000 last month.
I am definitely an advocate for this type of traffic generation!

Dan, that is a great return on investment. I'd be curious how many posts in other blogs and forums it took you to more than double your unique visitor count!

I have found that commenting on sites that are aligned with your personal interests and your blog topic is a great way to capture some long-tail traffic. I don't recommend it as a primary method to improve traffic, though, because you should comment when you have something useful to say, not simply to troll for link-traffic. (Which becomes pretty transparent shortly enough.) That said, I review my referrer logs a few times each week and I'm always amazed at how comments left on blogs months ago, or even a year ago, still drive traffic my way. It's amazing.
When people find your comments provocative and interesting, they'll be even more likely to find your blog content provocative and interesting. It's the best targeted advertising money can buy — and it's free!
At the risk of seeming to violate my own principles I'd like to point out my own traffic-generating tips here:
