Recently I had the opportunity to exchange e-mails and get to know an amazing individual by the name of Jeff Keller. Jeff is the author of the awesome book Attitude is Everything, and has been writing an excellent newsletter every month called "Here's to Your Success" for many years.
I was introduced to Jeff's work by another amazing guy, Joe Heuer, who in addition to being a great guy is also my neighbor in Glendale, WI. More about Joe soon!
I'm going to share the first half of my interview with Jeff today, and the second half next week, and next week we'll be giving away 5 signed copies of this great book "Attitude is Everything" to some lucky readers.
I know you'll enjoy this interview, because Jeff is full of positivity and practical tips that you can do to make your life great!
Phil: Jeff, for those who don't yet know you, please give a bit of background on who you are and how you got to get where you are today.
Jeff: In 1980, I graduated from law school and thought I’d be a lawyer for the rest of my life. However, I didn’t enjoy being an attorney and I became very discouraged and depressed. In 1985, I began studying attitude and motivational principles – and experienced many positive changes in my life. I got so enthused that I made a career change to become a motivational speaker and writer. My first book, Attitude is Everything, has sold more than 200,000 copies and includes 12 lessons on attitude and success. I have two other books that I have co-authored: Success and Happiness and If You Could Ask God. I feel very fortunate that I became aware of motivational principles and I love sharing this information with others.
Phil: Jeff, your motto, your life, your company; Attitude Is Everything - what does this mean to you?
Jeff: A positive attitude is the foundation for success and well-being. For our purposes, let’s define a positive attitude as OPTIMISM. I concede that attitude is not the only success concept you need to know and apply. You can’t just sit home with a smile and create a successful, rewarding life. Yet, without optimism you will not achieve very much since your attitude affects your beliefs – which in turn affects your results.
In addition, without a positive attitude, you won’t persist. Why keep making efforts unless you believe they will pay off in the end? You won’t be courageous unless you have an optimistic outlook. You won’t experience spiritual growth without a positive attitude. How many people do you know who are negative and complaining – and yet have a meaningful relationship with a Higher Power? Optimism opens you up spiritually. In summary, attitude activates all of the other success principles. That’s why I say that Attitude is Everything!
Phil: Jeff, I have to know: How do you keep a positive attitude every day?
Jeff: I fill my mind with positive inputs and limit negative inputs. I read something positive every morning soon after I wake up. I also receive some positive daily quotes online and other uplifting e-zines. At night, I frequently read a positive, uplifting book. In addition, several times each week, I listen to positive audio programs. I don’t take much time to listen to the “news” on radio and TV as this is poison for the mind.
Another thing I do is keep a Gratitude Journal. Each night, I write out all the things I am grateful for. This helps me to focus on the many blessings in my life. When you focus on blessings, you get more blessings.
I also take some time during each day to “empty” my mind. I sit in solitude or meditation even if it’s only for 5 or 10 minutes. This relieves stress and brings me back to the present moment.
Finally, I look at everything in my life through a spiritual lens. This helps me to keep perspective and see the bigger picture. We are so much more than we think we are!
Phil: John Maxwell recently published a book stating "attitude isn't everything" isn't completely true, but that it's the difference maker. What are your thoughts on this?
Jeff: I have tremendous respect for John Maxwell, although I must admit I haven’t read this particular book yet. As I mentioned earlier, attitude is not the only concept that you need to apply to be happy and successful. Attitude is the foundation, the starting point that unleashes your power. If you have a lousy attitude and are pessimistic, your life simply can’t work out well. Your career suffers. Your relationships suffer. Your spiritual growth is thwarted.
Attitude is the “difference maker” that allows you to thrive and become what you are capable of becoming. An investment in your attitude is the most important investment you can make.
Stay tuned for more great insights from Jeff Keller.
