Thank you Karen Putz for reminding me that video casting isn't for everyone. On The Main Thing video cast, Karen commented that "without captions, this isn't accessible for me." I didn't even think of that, but going forward, whenever I do a video or podcast, I will put up at least an outline of my notes so everyone can enjoy them.
The Main Thing
What do you do when the "main thing" isn't the area of your focus? If you're like me, this happens often, and you wander off to do something, anything, that you think is important. And you lose site of the "main thing."
My wife recently reminded me of this, as I was stressing out about not getting something or other done. She said "Does this contribute to your 'main thing' or is it just a distraction?"
DING! I realized she was right! I was just distracting myself from the "main thing." And this wasn't working out very well.
So I realized I have 2 good ways to get back into the flow, back into focus on the "main thing:"
- Have someone else call you on your distraction - My "someone else" is my wife. She keeps me in check. For you, it could be your boss, your best friend, your spouse, an e-mail buddy, or your blog readers. Anyone. Accountability circles can work wonders for this.
- Review your goals and desired outcomes often - If you take a look at your goals often, be honest with yourself when you're thinking about what you're about to do RIGHT NOW. Does it contribute to your goal, your "main thing?" If not, is it worth doing? Just the extra moment can give you the margin you need to refocus and recommit to doing the right thing.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to do one of my "main things;" I'm going to reconnect with my wife.

Phil, thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this accessible to me and many other deaf/hard of hearing readers. :)
