Networking = Learning + Sharing
Benjamin Bach is guest blogging for Phil today
I had a profound revelation recently. Josh Hinds was interviewing me for his excellent site, and he asked me what 'networking' meant to me. I answered:
Networking for me is all about meeting people and seeing if I can be valuable to them. Maybe I know someone who they should meet, maybe I read a book which can help their business - however I can help, I'm glad to do so.
Part of my enduring purpose is 'to give freely,' and I really try to live up to that when I'm in a 'networking' setting.
After
I wrote that, I realized something. For me, 'networking' means I have
someone to talk to about everything I'm learning - and maybe what I'm
learning can help them. Networking = Learning + Sharing .
Without life long learning, I have nothing to share to new people I meet!
Have you made Learning & Helping the foundation of your relationship building? If not, today is a great day to start!

I found on the online world networking is really important. WIthout doing networking I know I wouldn't have readers for my blogs. So I guess you have to stop being shy and dive in. You never know where it will take you!

Ament to what JC said - "stop being shy and dive in, you never know where it will take you." Very true, very true.
One thing I want to say is that I don't care much for the word "networking." I prefer "relationship building." Networking is, in my humble opinion, an outdated word b/c at least to me, the word conjures up an image of a bunch of people in a room hurriedly rushing around the room throwing out their business cards and rushing out the door to the next event. LOL
Funny image, isn't it? I much prefer relationship building cuz that's what we're doing whether online or offline.
My take on the word. Like I'm fond of saying, "it's a matter of perception."

Phil,
You embody modest helpfulness, meeting then seeing how you might serve. So congruent with your blog brand.

I am really interested in Networking and have spent much of the past 12 months working with clients from the insurance industry who had basically forgotten to talk to each other and their customers. This is a common problem these days...this short article published in the UK on small talk may also interest you
P.S. - Networking is under threat from the evil Blackberry! Kill them Kill them all!!!
